Staff members and our IRIS refugee ambassadors travel all over the state and region engaging with community members on important issues. We present in many different settings, encouraging connection to refugees, a deeper understanding of the refugee experience, and a celebration of the welcoming spirit that makes our nation strong.  We encourage you to attend any of our upcoming public events.

If you do not find an event listed in a town near you, stay posted! We will update this page as new opportunities arise.

If you would like IRIS to participate in or plan an event with your organization, please contact Ann O’Brien at aobrien@irisct.org and we will be happy to make arrangements with you. We love meeting new people and organizations at IRIS!

Milford Public Library will present a Refugee Awareness Night in partnership with New Haven-based IRIS - Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services on Tuesday, September 10th, 2019, 6:30-8:30pm.

The evening will feature a screening of the award-winning documentary Soufra, a wildly inspirational film that chronicles the journey of Miriam Shaar, a generational refugee living in a refugee camp outside Beruit, Lebanon. Miriam’s entrepreneurial spirit and desire to change her fate drives her to create the catering company Soufra, which she eventually expands into a successful food-truck business employing a dynamic and diverse group of refugee women from around the camp.

Following the film will be a panel discussion with IRIS’s Director of Immigration Legal Services, Rachel Doft, along with Sam Rose – an Iranian refugee and owner of Connecticut-based Green Leaf Catering and Food Truck, and Bettina Youngs – a Milford resident who worked with IRIS to coordinate the resettling of a refugee family to Milford in 2016.

Desserts provided by Green Leaf Catering; beverages courtesy of Milford Public Library.

Sponsored by Milford Clergy Association, Milford Speaks Out, National Organization of Women (NOW) - CT Chapter, and Sacred Heart University’s Campus Ministry.

This event is free and open to the public.
